Ghana’s Black Stars big 2-1 win over Mali in Bamako has improved the team’s standing in Group I in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. After bagging the win over the 2023 AFCON quarterfinalists, Ghana has moved from fifth place to second place having accrued six points from three games with two wins and a loss.

Heading into the contest, Ghana ranked fifth in the six team standings due to Central African Republic’s 1-0 win over Chad.

However, the win in Bamako moves Ghana to second place ranking behind Group I leaders Comoros though the Island nation has played a game fewer than Ghana.

Jordan Ayew climbed off the bench to score the winner in the 94th minute and complete the Black Stars comeback after conceding a Kamory Doumbia goal in the first half with Ernest Nuamah getting the equalizer in the 56th minute

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, is not too happy with Ghana’s Amputee Football team, the Black Challenge. According to reports, the Minister has criticized the team for accepting donations from external sources without consulting his office first.

This criticism came after the team received a $10,000 donation from former President John Mahama, who is also a presidential hopeful for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on July 12, 2024. The Minister’s main point of contention seems to be that the team should have first engaged with his office before accepting any external donations.

He stated, “When you come after the successes and there’s anything, the first point of contact is this office [MoYS]. “It’s not all doom and gloom for the team, though. They recently won the 2024 African Amputee Football Cup of Nations (AAFCON) in Egypt, successfully defending their title.

So, while there might be some political drama behind the scenes, the team’s on-field performance is something to be proud of! In the end, it’s a reminder that even in the world of sports, politics can sometimes play a role.
