President John Dramani Mahama has suspended the regional rotation of Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations to reduce government spending.
This year’s 68th Independence Day will feature a modest ceremony at the Jubilee House instead of the traditional grand event at Independence Square, which previously cost around GHC15 million.
The decision has sparked a debate on balancing national tradition with fiscal responsibility. While some view this as a necessary step to curb wasteful expenditure, others see it as a loss of regional inclusivity in national celebrations.
The move aims to redirect funds towards more pressing national needs, setting a precedent for future cost-saving measures in government events.
