Multiple protesters, including notable figures like lawyer Ama Governor and media personality Felicity Nelson, have been arrested during demonstrations under the themes #ReoccupyJulorbiHouse and #StopGalamseyNow.

These protests were aimed against the government’s handling of illegal mining, which has led to significant environmental degradation, particularly affecting water bodies.

There has been considerable outcry on social media platforms, with users expressing shock and anger over the arrests, especially noting the inclusion of senior citizens and minors among those detained.

The arrests have been highlighted as an overreach of police power, questioning the legality and ethics behind these actions.

According to reports, those detained have been moved to the Police Headquarters in Osu, with concerns raised over their treatment, including being held without formal charges or access to legal representation.

Democracy Hub, one of the organizing groups, has called out these conditions as inhumane, urging media attention to the situation at the police headquarters.

The protests also touch on broader issues of governance, economic challenges, and environmental policies ahead of critical elections in December 2024.

The situation underscores a deep-seated frustration with governmental inaction or perceived complicity in the environmental crisis caused by galamsey.

There’s a strong demand for the immediate release of the protesters and for accountability from the authorities involved in these arrests. The situation has sparked discussions on freedom of expression, human rights, and the rule of law in Ghana.
