Rodrigo Hernández Cascante, the influential midfielder for Manchester City, has been confirmed to be out for the remainder of the 2024/25 season due to an ACL injury in his right knee. This injury occurred during a Premier League match against Arsenal, where he was forced to leave the game early.

Reports from multiple sources, including ESPN and Marca, have confirmed the severity of the injury, indicating that Rodri will require surgery and a significant recovery period, likely keeping him sidelined for the rest of the current season.

This injury comes at a particularly challenging time for Manchester City, not only due to Rodri’s pivotal role in the team’s midfield but also amidst discussions about player workload and potential strikes due to the demanding football calendar.

Rodri himself had recently voiced concerns over the number of games players are expected to compete in, suggesting that the situation might lead to a strike action among footballers.

The absence of Rodri, often considered one of the best holding midfielders in the world and a contender for the Ballon d’Or, poses a significant challenge for Manchester City’s ambitions in both domestic and European competitions.

His loss is not just a blow in terms of his on-pitch contributions but also his leadership and presence in the dressing room. Manchester City, under Pep Guardiola, now faces the task of adapting their tactics or formations to cope without one of their key players for the remainder of the season.

Arne Slot’s Impressive Start at Liverpool

on

Arne Slot has made an impressive start at Liverpool Football Club, showcasing his managerial prowess with several significant achievements: Slot became the first Liverpool manager to win eight of his first nine matches in all competitions, a record that even his predecessor, Jürgen Klopp, did not achieve.

This milestone was marked by a 2-0 victory over Bologna in the UEFA Champions League, where Slot downplayed the record, focusing instead on long-term success. Liverpool, under Slot, has been at the top of the Premier League table, reflecting an excellent start to the 2024/25 campaign. They’ve won six out of their first seven matches, with their away form being particularly notable. Slot became just the fourth manager in Premier League history to win his first four away matches, joining an exclusive group with this achievement.

Slot’s impact isn’t just statistical; his tactical approach has been praised for blending the best of Klopp’s methods with his own innovations. This has led to a noticeable improvement in player performance and team cohesion. For instance, Ryan Gravenberch has transitioned from a fringe player to a regular starter, illustrating Slot’s ability to develop players.

Despite the early successes, Slot has expressed a desire for his legacy at Liverpool to be more than just initial wins. He’s focused on long-term success, aiming for trophies and a sustained period of dominance, indicating a deep ambition and a winner’s mentality.

Liverpool’s defensive solidity has been remarkable, conceding only two goals in their first seven league matches, which is the best record in the league. This defensive robustness, combined with clinical attacking plays, paints a picture of a team well-drilled under Slot’s management.

The contributions of players like Mohamed Salah, who continues to score crucial goals, and Diogo Jota, whose goal against Crystal Palace was pivotal, have been highlighted. Salah’s future at the club remains a topic of speculation due to contract talks, but his performance on the pitch under Slot has been undiminished.

Slot’s approach, combining tactical innovation with player development and a focus on results, has not only set Liverpool on a promising trajectory for the season but has also begun to carve out a unique managerial identity distinct from his predecessor, while respecting the legacy left by Klopp. This start suggests a bright future, though maintaining this momentum through the rigorous demands of the Premier League and European competitions will be Slot’s next challenge.

Paul Pogba’s four-year doping ban has been significantly reduced to 18 months following a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)

This reduction means that Pogba, who is currently a midfielder for Juventus and part of the France national team, will be eligible to resume his football career much sooner than initially feared. Originally handed a four-year suspension after testing positive for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which promotes the production of testosterone, Pogba’s ban now stands at 18 months.

Pogba can return to training with Juventus in January 2025 and could be playing competitive matches by March 2025. He expressed relief, stating, “Finally, the nightmare is over,” and indicated his eagerness to return to the pitch, emphasizing his integrity and gratitude towards CAS for hearing his case.

The reduction was based on the grounds that the doping was not intentional. Pogba had argued that the substance was part of a nutritional supplement prescribed by a doctor, not intended to enhance performance.

This ruling allows Pogba, at age 31, to potentially play out the remainder of his contract with Juventus, which extends until 2026, rather than facing the prospect of missing out on football until he was 34. The positive test occurred in August 2023, leading to a suspension in September of the same year.

The case exemplifies how strict liability in doping can be mitigated under certain circumstances, like unintentional ingestion or contamination. This outcome provides Pogba with an opportunity to reclaim his career, which has been marred by injuries and now this doping scandal, albeit with a significant portion of his peak years having been lost.
