South African swimmer Tatjana Smith, previously known as Tatjana Schoenmaker, secured the top position in her 100m breaststroke heat at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris with a time of 1:05.00, qualifying for the semi-finals.
She was closely followed by Pieter Coetze, who finished second in his 100m backstroke heat, and Aimee Canny, who placed fifth in her 200m freestyle heat, both also advancing to the semi-finals. Smith’s performance was notably close to her Olympic record, and she is considered a strong contender for another Olympic medal.
