Apple Inc. is facing a class action lawsuit filed by two female employees on behalf of more than 12,000 current and former female employees in California.
The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, alleges that Apple violated California’s Equal Pay Act and Fair Employment and Housing Act by paying women less than men for substantially similar work.
The plaintiffs claim that Apple has a centrally determined and uniformly applied policy and/or practice of paying its female employees less than male employees.
The lawsuit also alleges that Apple collected information about job candidates’ pay expectations and used that information to set starting salaries, which has had a disparate impact on women. The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for wages and other compensation owed, interest, and liquidated damages
