South Sudan’s men’s basketball team achieved a historic victory in their Olympic debut, defeating Puerto Rico 90-79.
This win marks the first Olympic basketball victory for South Sudan and only the second win for an African country in Olympic basketball since 1996. The game was highlighted by strong performances from South Sudanese players, including Carlik Jones and Nuni Omot.
The team’s success is particularly notable given South Sudan’s recent establishment as a nation and the relatively young age of its national basketball team, which was formed in 2011.
